Title: Compulsion

OCTOBER 15, 2008

After suffering horrid colds for weeks, Ross and I are finally starting to feel a bit better. But I'm wondering if what we have is really a cold, since colds don't last an eon and at the worst it felt more like the plague. But we are improving, though not as fast as I'd like, but Ross tells me one day we will be well again.

But I'm already starting to perk up since there are two UP games this week and I'm so looking forward to them. The last home game was two weeks ago and was miserable since it poured the whole time and suffice to say that standing in the rain for 90 minutes when you're already sick isn't fun. In fact, some would call it nuts, but we just call it devotion. Feverish, snot-filled devotion.

Because how could we miss a game when UP are doing so great this season? I admit, I worried about how UP would do this year, what with some of their best defenders graduating last year, but the freshman have been amazing and have contributed to the wins just as much, if not more so, than the veterans.

So, twelve games into this season, UP has a record of 11 wins and one loss and have outscored their opponents 40-3, and those are the kind of stats that make a soccer fan downright giddy. Especially a Timbers fan who just spent the last five months watching the Timbers schlepp to a dismal last place finish.

But it's funny in that, before UP started this season, I told Ross it would once again be UP's year to win it all based on the rule of three. UP won the championship in 2002 and then again three years later in 2005 so, based on the three year pattern, 2008 should be another championship year.

Of course, I was joking when I made up the rule of three because teams rarely follow patterns that way. That, I'd like UP to win the title more often, but it's funny how the number 3 keeps popping up this year: UP have only been scored on 3 times this season, they're averaging 3 goals a game, and UP is ranked #3 in the nation. Oh, and there's that hat trick one of the freshmen just scored.

That's a lot of threes and, while I don't think there's any validity to my silly rule of three proclamation, I'll definitely get a chuckle out of it if UP ends up winning the championship this season, three years after their last title.
