Title: Compulsion

AUGUST 27, 2008

There was an Asian elephant born at the Oregon Zoo last Saturday and I've totally fallen in love with the little guy.

Then again, it seems everyone has gone totally bonkers over this baby, thanks in part to technology.

The Oregon Zoo has the most successful elephant breeding program of any zoo in the world, but this was the first elephant born at the zoo since the web became commonplace and the zoo used their web site to keep people up-to-date about the blessed event.

Beginning Friday, when Rose Tu went into labor, the zoo started posting updates to their web site about how labor was progressing, so people were able to follow along and feel a part of it. The zoo blogged the labor, birth, the scary problems following birth, and all the details since and it's been a fun experience to follow.

Granted, I would have thought this little guy was amazing regardless of whether I got to read a blog detailing his arrival, but getting to follow right along and see the photos and videos has made me much more attached to the little guy.

And despite his rough entry into the world, little guy is doing great. Anyone who wants to read the blog on his birth, see the photos and videos, etc, can do so at the zoo's baby page (it's reverse chronological order, so start at the bottom).

Oh, and Rama the painting elephant is a fun visit, too.
