Title: Compulsion

APRIL 21, 2007

First Portland Timbers game of the season!

I've been waiting for this since the last whistle in the last game of last season. Or, in other words, I've been waiting for this since last September and, damn, was the wait ever long but, finally, the interminably dreary off season is over!

The game started with the Timbers scoring their first goal less than 2 minutes into the match, it continued with the Timbers playing a superb game full of the kind of adeptness and skill that we haven't seen for a season or two, and concluded with a resounding 3-1 victory over Puerto Rico.

Man, talk about a fantastic way to start the season, especially considering the civil war that broke out between the Timbers Army and the new coach in the preseason. It's a long, melodramatic story but, suffice it to say, I half expected to go to the game tonight and find the Timber Army rioting with the new coach while the Timbers played a dismal, losing game, but it was just the opposite. The Timbers played fantastic and won the match and the Timbers Army had no need of rioting being that the media coverage of the war between the coach and the Army caused a big spike in attendance.

So, rather than riot, we'll wait for the coach to apologize for claiming that the Army's passion must be reigned in, lest it scare off mild mannered soccer mom's. The only thing the Army has ever done is increase attendance because people don't go to soccer games for mild mannered entertainment. People go to soccer games for the beauty of the sport, the wild passion of the fans, and to watch the hardcore fanatics occasionally beat the crap out of each other. That's what's soccer is all about, my friend - the beauty, the passion, and the occasional riots. And the Army? We're just doing our part to make sure no one gets cheated out of the full soccer experience. ;)
