Title: Compulsion

FEBRUARY 27, 2007

The good news is I'm at the point where I can confidently say that I survived my bout with emergency contraception and, what's more, the stuff wasn't all that bad. It caused abdominal pain and cramps, fatigue, headache, and crankiness, but it was nothing that advil, chocolate, and time alone couldn't fix. Now the big question is just whether the stuff worked, which we won't find out for awhile, but at least now we won't have to spend the interim in a total panic. Emergency contraception reduces risk of pregnancy by 75%, which is darn good, so now we can just be mildly worried until we find out for sure.

Of course, Ross' urologist hasn't helped calm our pregnancy fears any being that Ross had a blood test last week to test his testosterone level and we got a letter from the urologist today stating that Ross' testosterone level is now... too high. Talk about a shock! Suffice it to say that, after all the years Ross spent suffering from low testosterone and countless doctors telling us there was no treatment for it, the last thing we ever thought we'd hear a doctor say is that Ross' testosterone is too high. But as I've said before, this urologist really knows what he's doing and, thanks to the medication he prescribed, Ross' testosterone has gone from 120 ng/dl to now being 1,001 ng/dl. And it's great news that the medication worked, but now the urologist is worried about Ross' testosterone being too high. Technically, Ross is still within normal range (500 - 1,000 ng/dl) but, given the fact that Ross' testosterone has continually increased since starting the med (Nov: 120, Dec: 900, Feb: 1,0001) and hasn't leveled off, the urologist wants Ross to decrease his medication to prevent Ross' testosterone from skyrocketing and turning him into the incredible hulk.

So, finding out that Ross is now in the upper percentile of testosterone just a few days after the opps that lead to our needing emergency contraception is a little unnerving, especially since we've already had one unplanned pregnancy since Ross started the medication. It used to be that we thought we'd never get pregnant, not matter how much we tried or how many doctors helped, but now its at the point where I'm afraid I'll end up pregnant if Ross so much as sneezes in my general direction. Suffice to say I'm really hoping he doesn't get a cold because I can just imagine trying to explain that to my doctor. "Yep, doc, I'm pregnant again. What can I say? Ross sneezed and now the entire neighborhood is knocked up."
