Title: Compulsion

FEBRUARY 24, 2007

Today was fun. First we had to slink into our local pharmacy and announce to a total stranger, otherwise known as the pharmacist, that boy, did we ever have a good time last night - wink wink, nudge nudge, know whatahmean - and now could we please have some emergency contraception? And after the pharmacist asked the necessary but embarrassing questions like, "when did the 'incident' occur?" we were given the emergency contraception (Plan B) and then left to debate over which one of us was more responsible for the giant brain fart that lead to our forgetting to use a condom last night.

Oi. Suffice it to say that when emergency contraception became available without a prescription, I thought it was a great idea, but I never thought I'd ever have any need of it myself. But suffice it to say I now have a whole new appreciation for emergency contraception and its immediate availability. Now we just have to hope this stuff works, because it's not always successful. It works by preventing ovulation, so its effectiveness depends on where you're at in your cycle and how quickly you take it after unprotected sex. What works in our favour is that I took the first pill less than 24 hours after the mishap, but the big unknown is where I'm at in my cycle, what with my having a d&c three weeks ago, so only time will tell. Suffice it to say I'm keeping my fingers - and fallopian tubes - crossed.

And the other big question is just how sick and nutty will this stuff make me. Emergency contraception is simply just mega doses of the active ingrediant in birth control pills and, after my recent bout with birth control pills that caused me to break out in hives and sent me skittering off to crazyville, we're more than a little worried about the effect emergency contraception will have. But I told Ross that if/when this stuff starts to make me crazy, I'll let him know right away so that he can flee for the hills, but he told me he'd do no such thing. He said he'll stay right here with me and help me through because he loves me, at which point I told him, "no, honey, that's not love, that's just crazy." And I should know. I'm starting to become a real pro at the crazy thing.
