Title: Compulsion

September 29, 2006

I was excited about going to the UP game tonight. It had been 2 weeks since the last home game and I was going through withdrawl. But when we got to the field, we were greeted by the unhappy news that the game was sold out.

Luckily, the sell out didn't stop us from seeing the game. Last year, when we encountered our first sold out game, we discovered that you can see most of the field from an embankment at one end of the venue. The ground outside the stadium at that end is elevated and lined with trees and a low brick wall and you can see 3/4 of the field from there, so it's become our trusty spot to watch sold out games from and that's what we did tonight.

Of course, this year is different in that I'm pregnant and not feeling well, which makes standing outside for 90 min more of a challenge, but my love of UP trumps fatigue and nausea, and I devotedly stood peeking over the wall for the entire game. And what a game it was! There was some worry over the fact that two of UP's star players - striker Megan Rapinoe and defender Steph Lopez - weren't there for the game (they were playing for the national team in a game vs China), but UP did fine without them, beating UW 5-0.

Happy sigh. Things were rocky for UP in their first few games of the season, but they've quickly settled down and gotten back to their winning ways, which makes me a happy camper. This pregnancy thing may be rough at this point, but at least I have soccer to distract me. But I do fear that the combination of crazy pregnancy hormones and soccer fandom may lead me to do something nutty, like name the baby after my favorite teams or players, but hopefully Ross will be sane enough to veto baby names Portand Pilots and Timber Jim.
