Title: Compulsion

September 22, 2006

The doctor's office called with the results of my blood tests and, based on the level of human growth hormone in my blood, my doctor estimates that I am four to five weeks pregnant. That's only an educated guess, though, since I can't remember the date of my late period, which makes it hard for my doctor to be more exact. But my doctor did give me the name of an obstetrician that she really likes and told me that the obstetrician will do more blood tests and an ultrasound to more precisely determine how far along I am.

Although, if you are not familiar with pregnancy, saying that I am four to five weeks pregnant is a little misleading. For some reason, doctor's consider the two weeks -before- conception in the total count of weeks, so saying that I'm four to five weeks along means that I am only two to three weeks into the actual pregnancy. Why doctors do it that way, I don't really know. It's a bit confusing, but my whinning about it is going to change the world of obstetrics.

So, now we make an appointment to see the obstetrician and we'll take things from there. I'm still in shock about all this and have a lot of mixed emotions, especially about getting my hopes up. According to statistics, as many as 25% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage and the majority of those miscarriages occur in the first trimester (first 3 months), so I'm being cautiously optimistic. Wait and see is the approach I'm taking for now. That may seem harsh, but I don't want to get my hopes up and then get my heart ripped out.
