Title: Compulsion

October 09, 2005

University of Portland game today. This is the first soccer we've seen since the Timbers were eliminated from the playoffs by They Who Must Not Be Named, and it did my soul good to get out and see footy again. Some people go to church on sunday, but soccer is my spiritual enlightenment.

UP played Gonzaga, beating them 2-0. UP dominated most of the game and their talent was amazing, so I was surprised when write ups of the game said that UP wasn't sharp today and didn't play a very good game. If this was an off game, they must play like superheros when they're on

Christine Sinclair scored both goals, making this the 14th straight game she's scored in, which brings her within one game of the NCAA record for consecutive games with a goal. Now if she can score in both of the next 2 games and she'll break the record. No pressure there.

So UP upped their record to 13-0-0, their best start in school history. And since #1 ranked UNC lost today, it's likely that UP will get the top spot when the new national rankings are released tomorrow. UP has won a national championship before (2002 with coach Clive Charles), but they've never had a #1 ranking during the regular season, so it will be great for them to finally get that. Clive Charles would be proud. Sniff.
