Title: Compulsion

June 23, 2005   In a shocking move, the Timbers released two defenders, Aaron Heinzen and Shawn Saunders, leaving the team with only 3 defenders. Yeah, that's just what we need right now, less defense.

Now, everyone is speculating that this means the Timbers plan to sign one or two new defenders, perhaps from the MLS, but it's still hard to see Aaron and Shawn go. And I worry about how this will affect our goalie, Josh Saunders. Josh is the brother of Shawn Saunders, one of the guys that was released, and I'm sure this is hard on both of them.

With the way things are going - record breaking 5-0 loss, releasing defenders, scoring slump, etc - I think we may need to start wearing crash helmets at the games. But, if nothing else, at least the fans are sticking by the team. As fans have so eloquently stated over and over on the message board, "so what if we suck!" and I'm sure the undefeated Montreal Impact will be quite amused by that battle cry at the next game. But they'll probably be even more amused by the fact that we're playing with 1 striker, 9 midfielders and no defenders. Oi. :\
